Panasonic KX-TG6645B DECT 6.0 Cordless Phone with Answering System, Black, 5 Handsets(US Version, Imported)

This phone system is nice, but it's far from perfect, and my rating and review reflect that:Pros: Call quality is good The price was good, especially considering the number of handsets The shared CallerID and phonebook is really nice The handsets have integrated hands-free jacks, speakerphone, and belt clips. The fact that it integrates with voicemail is good.Cons: The handsets are very slow. Doing anything, even auto-dialing takes longer than it should. The phonebook is fairly limited. Only 50 entries, no grouping for home/cell/office, and only 15 characters for each entry. The ability to name handsets is limited as well. While each phone can be given a name, you can't "page" from the base on that name, only number. If I don't memorize every handset's number, it's hard to find "The kitchen phone." You have to be quick on paging too, or you accidentally page all phones. It looks like paging from another handset is better and allows you to page based on phone name. While I like voicemail integration, receiving a voiceMail seems to "take over" every handset. Once a voiceMail is present, it tells you in two locations that you have voiceMail, and the main "redial" button becomes a check voiceMail button. The name of the phone becomes hidden, so once again you don't know which handset each one is unless you memorize the numbers (or check your voiceMail). There is a secondary button to check redials, but now one button becomes useless unless there is voiceMail. Perhaps I'm just being picky on this, but I find the buttons to be unintuitive: Pressing down is common for phonebook, but on this phone, down is a duplicate of the "menu" button. It's also mislabeled as "volume."In the end, I'm don't plan to return the phone, and I'm sure I'll get used to all the quirks, but I find some of the design and implementation issues with this phone less than ideal. Still good for the price, but I'm picky.
This is but one of countless Panasonic items I've purchased over the years. I bought it to replace a very old Panasonic wireless telephone set I'd had for many, many years without a lick of trouble (it was just old and beat up). At first, I was very happy with the new system as it was one of the few "brand name" phone systems that offered the number of handsets I needed (5). The problem is that within a month, one of the handsets (the one I used the most in the kitchen) started to randomly stop transmitting my voice to the person on the other end. I could always still hear them just fine, but countless friends told me they thought the line had gone dead -or I had accidentally hung up. Occasionally, everything would return to normal after just a few seconds, but most times the only thing that would cure it was either to hang up and call back, or go get another handset and click it on before turning the inoperable one off. The obvious 'work-around' for this problem was to swap handsets so that the inoperable one was in a less-used spot. Viola! Worked! Well, it worked for about 2 weeks before the newly-swapped handset started exhibiting the same problems as the first. I did this twice more until I found a handset that works almost 100% of the time (almost).Needless to say, I'm LESS-THAN-HAPPY with my purchase. I'm well down the road with a system that seems to have a latent failure mode that some other reviewers sited in their remarks as well. Too bad, because I WAS a huge fan of Panasonic products. The problem is (and I'll betcha a cup of coffee on this one) Panasonic PROBABLY didn't even manufacture this phone. It was probably manufactured under contract by some independent electronics manufacturer, as is very customary in consumer electronics these days -where the big guys simply can't keep posting the profits demanded by their boards without finding ways to reduce costs. And one BIG way is to bid these kinds of projects out to contract manufacturers. So, despite having their name on the product, they probably never even participated in the design/manufacture of this phone. Just bid out the concept and let someone else design/manufacture it for them -then run it through their distribution network as if it had come from one of their [most-likely-now-defunct] factories. Unfortunately, as consumers demand more and more functionality from their devices at lower and lower prices, this is how that is achieved. The sad truth for consumers is that in order for the big guys to remain viable against the small guys, they too must find ways of reducing costs. And often, that means NO LONGER MAKING THE STUFF THEY ONCE MADE THAT MET THEIR HIGH QUALITY STANDARDS. I believe that this product falls into that category. Certainly, electronics manufacturing isn't rocket science, but IT IS subject to the same cost cutting demands that often result in the substitution of cheaper and cheaper component parts that fail at a higher rate than was once considered acceptable by the large brand name companies when they manufactured this stuff themselves. With such massive pressure to maintain company profitability levels year over year, purchasing departments are forced to source less expensive component parts for their products. And this has forced a `softening' by the big brand name companies of their once strict quality standards -thus "allowing" more frequent product failures than would have ever been acceptable before. Ultimately, this price is paid by the consumer who buys a product that fails well after the [deliberately short] warranty window -so the brand name companies can maintain profits whilst paying no penalty for reduced product performance in the field. Think I'm kidding? Research how long a typical LCD TV is DESIGNED to last these days. That'll make that 1978 Sony Trinitron picture tube TV you still have downstairs in your rec room look like a super value by comparison!!!!!EDIT: 11-20-2014 - I have finally given up on this phone set. It's just too frustrating trying to cope with a system that "mostly" works when there are other choices out there that "always" work. Bye-Bye Panasonic.
It works perfectly and arrived much sooner than anticipated. The beauty of this product is that when someone is leaving a message it can be heard on all the handsets -- not just on the base unit. I like that when I put a name and number in memory it is automatically added to all the other handsets too. The hands free feature is great as I receive comments as to how loud and clear people can hear me. Great product for the price. I would recommend it.Francis.Quebec, Canada
